« An artist earns the right to call himself a creator only when he admits to himself that he is but an instrument. »
Inspired by the emotional depth of classical music and the dramatic interplay of light and shadow found in the Dutch Golden Age, Zhana Viel creates atmospheric portraits balancing surrealism and minimalism. Entirely self-taught, her artistic journey began in nature and later evolved through photography and design under the mentorship of American photographer Giovanni, who encouraged her intuitive and independent approach to art-making. Working from her London studio during quiet evening hours, Viel approaches painting as a dialogue between conscious and unconscious thought. Her portraits are defined by restrained palettes, dark pastel tones, and soft highlights that emphasise emotional presence. Influenced by Rembrandt’s mastery of chiaroscuro, she aims to create timeless, psychologically charged works that invite viewers to complete the emotional narrative themselves. Her works have appeared in private collections across Europe, the United States, and Australia and book covers.
