About this artwork
I painted this still life over a couple of days, trying to capture it while the fish were still fresh. It’s a tribute to the generosity of nature and the beauty of simple things. At the center of the composition is a pike — the queen of the rivers, powerful and elegant. Alongside her are a vivid perch and several small crucian carps, each with its own character and color.
I wanted to convey the liveliness of the moment — the shimmer on the fish… scales, the brightness of the lemons, the sharpness of the red chili pepper. It was important for me not just to depict, but to feel: the coolness of the metal tray, the moisture of the fish, the warmth of the light. Expressive brushstrokes, a rich color palette, and a spontaneous composition give the painting a sense of immediacy, as if you’ve just returned from an early morning catch.
"Pike" is more than just a still life — it’s a captured story, full of color, flavor, and life.
