Words surface and disappear throughout these works. Some can be read immediately; others sit so lightly against the surface that they seem close to vanishing. Handwriting is covered, blurred, crossed through, or absorbed into layers of paint, leaving fragments caught somewhere between being written and being lost.
There is an intimacy to that partial visibility. A sentence does not have to be fully legible to register. Sometimes a few words are enough. Elsewhere, writing remains underneath more dominant marks, suggesting something was there before, even when we can no longer make out exactly what it said.
The quieter the words become, the closer we seem to look. A faint line of handwriting suddenly carries more weight than something written clearly across the surface. There is the feeling that if we look away, we might miss it altogether. Perhaps that is what holds our attention: not necessarily what the words say, but the sense that they may not be there for long.
