A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - I present a collection dedicated to the powerful theme of The House. This theme is a perennial artistic inspiration because it stands as a universal metaphor for refuge, memory, self, and belonging. Psychologically, the house often symbolizes the self or the unconscious mind, with its rooms representing different aspects of our psyche. Symbolically, the home is the original vessel of history and identity.
The depiction of the house became an essential subject in 20th-century art, notably post-1950. American Realist Edward Hopper is famous for using the exterior and interior of homes to explore themes of isolation and psychological quietude. A notable work from this period is his 1952 painting Morning Sun. In sculpture, Rachel Whiteread cast the negative spaces of domestic structures, most famously in her controversial 1993 work House, emphasizing absence and memory. The American photographer Gregory Crewdson is world-famous for his meticulous, cinematic tableaus of suburban interiors and exteriors, such as in his series Beneath the Roses, using the home setting to stage scenes of profound mystery and existential dread. Our selected emerging artists extend this rich history, interpreting the house as structure, sanctuary, or psychological stage.
