Blocked Forms - curated by Natalie Slater

A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - 'Blocked Forms' brings together works in which color is organized through decisive shape. Across the selection, bold fields of red, black, cobalt, yellow, pink, and softened neutrals are structured into compositions where blocks, bars, circles, cutouts, and organic silhouettes establish the image’s internal rhythm. What sharpens the curation is the way these artists use color blocking as both formal device and spatial strategy. Some compositions rely on crisp-edged rectangles, repeated modular units, and graphic divisions that create order through contrast. Others introduce curved or irregular forms that interrupt the grid, allowing the compositions to shift between control and visual play. The tension between geometry and fluidity gives the selection its energy. Hard boundaries coexist with softer interruptions, while flat planes of color begin to suggest depth, movement, and pattern. Throughout the curation, color blocking becomes a nuanced balance of positive and negative space, where each shape gains force through the presence of the one beside it, allowing contrast, rhythm, and spatial tension to build across the surface.
