A curation by Elisa Pritzker, Owner / Director at Pritzker Studio & Gallery - "From Degas to Dance Now" celebrates the enduring fascination with dance, anchored by the vision of Edgar Degas, the most prolific painter of dancers. His intimate studies of ballet rehearsals revealed discipline, vulnerability, and grace, establishing dance as a central subject in modern painting. Alongside Degas’s legacy, other masters expanded the artistic vocabulary of dance: Pierre-Auguste Renoir immortalized the joy of social dance in works such as Dance at Bougival; Édouard Manet captured the vitality of Spanish troupes; Henri Matisse distilled rhythm into pure color and form in his monumental La Danse; and Marc Chagall infused choreography with dreamlike poetry, where figures float in perpetual motion.
Contemporary artists reimagine dance through new materials, perspectives, and cultural contexts, affirming it as a timeless metaphor for joy and human connection.
