Horizontal - curated by Natalie Slater

A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - The horizontal figure anchors every work in this selection, yet it is rarely the first thing the eye finds. Broad planes of color, patterned surfaces, and layered compositions compete with the body, sometimes absorbing it almost entirely before allowing it to reappear. Each artist handles that relationship differently. In some works, color presses tightly against the figure; in others, it opens space around it. The body shifts between presence and absence, moving from subject to shape and back again without ever losing its place within the composition. Seen together, these works treat the reclining figure less as a narrative device than as a formal structure. The repeated horizontal pose creates a common thread, while color and surface continually alter the way each painting is experienced.
