Horse riding - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - The theme of the Horse is deeply ingrained in human culture, representing power, nobility, speed, and untamed spirit. It symbolizes the dynamic relationship between humanity and nature, embodying mastery and grace. Psychologically, the horse often reflects our vital energy, freedom, and the disciplined control of instinct. From Palaeolithic cave paintings to Romantic canvases of battle and transport, the horse has been a constant artistic subject. Post-1950, artists often utilize the horse to explore themes of mythology, spectacle, and mass-media imagery. Deborah Butterfield is renowned for her life-sized horse sculptures, such as Palmyra (1991), crafted from found materials like driftwood and scrap metal, which fuse natural forms with raw texture. In conceptual art, Maurizio Cattelan's works, like the taxidermized horse Novecento (1997), suspended from the ceiling, disrupt traditional heroic representations. The world-famous photographer Robert Frank, while known for his street photography, also captured the quintessential American spectacle of horse racing, often with a raw, unglamorous eye, reflecting the cultural obsession with competition and chance. This collection celebrates the enduring majesty and complex symbolism of the equine form.
