A curation by Sarah Melloul, Curator at Independent - Joteya—a term from the Moroccan Arabic dialect meaning “flea market”—presents a selection dedicated to the poetry of markets, souks, and antique fairs. Diverse locations, from Tibet to Italy, France, and Egypt, serve as the backdrop for these paintings and drawings, which explore the atmospheres, stalls, and scattered objects that populate these spaces. The works also feature shoppers, sellers, and the architecture of these venues, sometimes open, sometimes covered. Through composition, color, and gesture, the series celebrates the rhythm, richness, and fleeting beauty of these vibrant environments, offering the viewer a sensory experience of the material and social textures of markets around the world.
