Katharina Kretschmer: Stories in Pattern - curated by Natalie Slater

A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - Katharina Kretschmer’s paintings have the feeling of stories told through images. Figures gather, embrace, mourn, travel, hide, and watch one another, while animals, trees, flowers, and repeated patterns fill the space around them. Drawing from the visual language of folk art, Kretschmer works with flattened forms, strong outlines, and densely worked surfaces. Pattern is everywhere—across clothing, landscapes, bodies, and backgrounds—giving the paintings a rhythm that carries from one scene to the next. There is often a larger story behind the image, but Kretschmer doesn’t spell everything out. A gesture, a group of figures, or the way two people hold one another can suggest tenderness, loss, fear, or protection. Some scenes feel intimate; others carry the weight of something shared or collective. Throughout the selection, storytelling comes through as much in the details as in the figures themselves. Each painting feels like a scene pulled from a longer narrative, with enough left open for us to enter it ourselves.
