A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - Love, in its infinite forms, is arguably the most universal and powerful theme in art. It inspires artists because it embodies a spectrum of human experience—from passionate intimacy and tender connection to intense vulnerability and even loss. It is a powerful symbol of unity and the psychological core of human existence, representing the emotional ties that shape our lives.
Since 1950, artists have re-examined love beyond idealized romance. The Pop Artist Robert Indiana captured the theme with graphic simplicity and immediate impact in his iconic sculpture LOVE (1964), transforming the word into a universal emblem. Conversely, the painter Francis Bacon explored the darker, more visceral and complex psychological tension within couples in his powerful, emotional portraits. The world-famous photographer Robert Doisneau is celebrated for immortalizing fleeting, spontaneous moments of urban affection, most famously in his photograph Le Baiser de l'Hôtel de Ville (Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville) (1940), capturing the timeless magic of public romance. This collection explores the enduring, complex beauty of love and loving moments.
