A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - Maximilian Davis brings a wide range of references into his paintings—literature, mythology, history, figures, architecture, and abstraction. They appear in fragments, layered among loose gestures, text, pattern, and intense passages of color.
The paintings are dense, but there is a structure to the way Davis builds them. Images surface and disappear, scale shifts, and recognizable forms are often interrupted by paint. Nothing stays isolated for very long.
Across this selection, I was drawn to that constant movement between image and gesture. There is always something else entering the frame, pulling the eye in another direction and asking you to look again.
