Night Table - curated by Natalie Slater

A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - This curatorial selection is built around density. The backgrounds are not neutral. They are saturated — black, umber, deep blue, near-opaque green. The dark carries weight. It surrounds the objects rather than sitting behind them. Light enters narrowly. It catches the rim of a vase, the curve of citrus, the edge of a petal. Everything else recedes into a thickened field. The contrast is structural. Color intensifies because it is pressed against shadow. Glass becomes sharper. Porcelain cooler. Fruit heavier. The dark does not dramatize the scene; it contains it. Across artists, the still life is staged within this compressed atmosphere. The space feels enclosed, almost interior — as if the viewer has stepped into a room where the lights have been lowered and attention has narrowed. The richness is not decorative. It is built through restraint.
