A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - The Angel is a universal and profound theme, offering endless artistic inspiration as a celestial messenger and a symbol of hope, protection, salvation, and the divine presence. Angels embody the longing for transcendence and often serve as a psychological representation of our spiritual guides or higher, moral conscience. Historically ubiquitous, from Renaissance frescoes to Romantic paintings, the Angel motif evolved dramatically post-1950. The theme transitioned from purely religious representation to a commentary on human fragility and societal change. Anselm Kiefer is known for his monumental, evocative paintings that often include angels as figures of memory and historical witness, such as in his work Lilith (1987), where the figure is a fallen, complex celestial being. Similarly, Felix Gonzalez-Torres created the moving, minimalist installation "Untitled" (LA) (1991), a pile of candy with an ideal weight of 175 pounds—the weight of his dying partner—which functions as a disappearing, earthly 'angel' of love and loss. The world-famous photographer Cindy Sherman has explored this theme by using herself in costumed, dramatic self-portraits, sometimes depicting unsettling, pseudo-religious figures that border on the angelic.
