Steffen Schulze: Quake - curated by Natalie Slater

A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - Steffen Schulze’s Quake paintings are built through accumulation and fracture. Paint, epoxy, metallic leaf, and heavily worked surfaces gather into dense fields that appear cracked, weathered, and at times almost geological. Some resemble scorched earth or aging walls; others break into shards that catch the light and shift as you move around them. Color moves differently from one work to the next. Deep blues and mineral greens settle into darker surfaces, while pinks, violets, copper, and flashes of gold push forward through the cracks. Schulze allows those breaks to remain visible. They become part of the structure of each painting, giving the surfaces a sense of having been subjected to pressure and change. What I find compelling about Quake is that the damage never feels final. Cracks open into other colors. Broken areas reveal another layer. Dense passages give way to something lighter underneath. The paintings seem to find their form through disruption, as though breaking apart is simply another stage in becoming something else.
