Superheroes are among us - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - Superheroes function as a modern mythology, embodying archetypal struggles and the psychological duality between extraordinary power and human vulnerability. Symbolically, figures like Batman or Wonder Woman represent our collective aspirations for justice and the "Übermensch" ideal, often serving as a mirror for contemporary social anxieties and the desire for protection. Since 1950, this theme has transitioned from pulp magazines to high art, primarily through the Pop Art movement. Andy Warhol famously celebrated this iconography in his Myths series with the screen print Superman (1981), while Mel Ramos blended commercial pin-up aesthetics with heroism in works like Wonder Woman (1962). In more recent decades, the theme has been deconstructed by artists like Banksy, who uses these figures for sharp political satire. The world-famous photographer David LaChapelle frequently integrates superhero motifs into his saturated, surrealist compositions to critique celebrity worship and consumerism. This selection highlights how the superhero remains a potent, evolving symbol of the human condition.
