The Restless Line - curated by Natalie Slater

A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - Franziska Ostermeier and Ruben Nieto share an approach to drawing that feels immediate and intensely physical. Pencil, pastel, and paint are layered, erased, dragged, and worked across the paper, allowing the image to develop through the accumulation of marks. Ostermeier’s compositions move between loose fields of color and more concentrated passages of line, often carrying the suggestion of a landscape without fully describing one. Nieto brings a different intensity: figures and fragments break through dense, agitated surfaces, giving his works a more graphic edge. In both, drawing feels active rather than preparatory. A line can interrupt a field of color, disappear beneath another gesture, or redirect the entire composition. The energy comes from that constant revision—the sense that the image is being worked out directly on the page.
