The still life

Still life is a popular genre in Western art, it finds its roots in antiquity but came to be greatly celebrated during the Dutch Golden Age of painting. Typically, Still Life is the depiction of natural or man-made objects and traditionally centered on compositions of food, wine, flowers and small household items. The genre can either be a celebration of the pleasures of food and drink or can provide an allegorical representation of the transient nature of such pleasures, making a poignant link to mankind's mortality.
