Toned - curated by Natalie Slater

A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - These works stay close to the male body. Torsos, shoulders, arms — often more legible than the face. In some paintings the face drops out entirely. In others it lingers, but without clarity — blurred, turned, or held in a neutral expression. The body carries most of the information. Across the works, the figure is neither exaggerated nor fixed. Build shifts. Presence shifts. What reads as strength in one image softens in another. There is a sense of searching, but nothing is declared. The paintings return to the same question without resolving it: how the male figure is seen when it isn’t performing a role, and when the body is left to carry what the face does not.
