A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - Yulia Lastochkina’s paintings are built through contrasts in surface. Smooth fields of iridescent color meet cracked textures, gilded passages, and dense, tactile forms that shift between the organic and the geological. Nature is present throughout, though rarely in a literal way. Rock, water, plants, and other familiar forms are broken down into shape, texture, and color. At close range, the paintings become almost topographical, with each change in material creating its own edge, depth, or interruption. Throughout the paintings, surface is never incidental. Color responds to texture, reflective passages shift with the light, and changes in material give each composition its depth and physical presence.
