The silicone wall installation is a commissioned piece of public art for the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians of Westphalia-Lippe as part of a building renovation. Located in the upper part of the foyer, it is clearly visible above visitors' heads. The industrial material silicone is imbued with an almost lifelike quality in the wall object "Lab Sweets." The organically flowing edge of the image and the multi-layered surface structure… invite speculation, constantly exploring the boundaries between naturalness and artificiality. Associations with swarms, lichens, fungi, or intensely colored marine life such as anemones, corals, and other biomorphic structures are readily apparent. The individual structural elements are created using a classic molding process, resulting in an internal cavity that evokes a transcendent impression. Through its size, unusual shape, materiality, and vibrant colors, the wall object commands the viewer's attention.
The sprawling cosmos of Dortmund artist Barbara Koch zooms viewers into a magical world of her own. Koch uses media such as painting, sculpture, and installations and trained at renowned art schools such as the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan. Her distinctive style, characterized by a professional and conscious approach to her chosen visual language, focuses on the classic casting of abstract-figurative formations, incorporating initial drawings, models, and ultimately silicone elements into the creative process. The biomorphic formations, often made of silicone, seem to exude a toxic beauty. The works are typically multi-partite, evoking associations with swarms, lichens, and fungi, as well as imaginative magnifications of microcosmic phenomena and flourishing, intact underwater worlds.
