While living in Nepal, Pera stumbled upon the surreal Shiva Festival in the heart of Kathmandu.
Surrounded by hundreds of Babas, ascetic vagabonds dressed in bright multi colored fabrics, who had come from all over India and Nepal to worship Lord Shiva.
For this yearly three-day festival, they reunite in the midst of small temples perched on top of a hill overlooking the city and the river that is in constant use for cremation ceremonies, surrounded… by monkeys, trees and fires to make their special chai tea.
They meditate, reciting mantras while clouds of smoke fume out of their mouths, obnubilating their minds and eyes from which fiery visions seem to take flight.
The collection aims to represent the vivid impressions of contrasts I perceived. The misery of an ascetic life that clashes with the grace and elegance of their glorious colorful tunics.
Their quest for the Ego’s annulment contrasts with their proud postures and poses that leaked an ostentation of self.
« The purpose of art allows for a celebration of the creative aspects of the human spirit, expressing the beauty of wonder and freedom as well as instilling insight to the viewer. »
