About this artwork
Painted alla prima from a live model in motion, I was experimenting with breaks in the picture plane as well exclusively using primary colors with white to see what would transpire. I often start with a limiting factor such as a certain color scheme or brush size or palette knives to discover different outcomes.
Painted on Arches Oil Paper, mounted on archival composite board with wood cradle for support.
Christine Ritchie is an accomplished painter with a rich background, including a BFA and MFA from Pratt Institute, extensive international plein air studies, and decades of teaching and curatorial experience. Her expressive alla prima technique—applied to both vibrant figurative works and luminous landscapes—captures the immediacy of the moment, focusing on gesture, movement, and the intrinsic qualities of paint and surface. Through her art, she evokes a deep sense of shared humanity, inviting viewers to experience the rhythm, physicality, and emotional resonance of being present in both figure and nature.
