About this artwork
Daan fuses multiple layers of glass together in combination with iron oxides to achieve the desired result. Some parts are applied as powder, which is best compared to sand or finely ground glass, while other parts are applied with a brush and Arabic gum. Afterward, all the layers are fused together at around 800°C.
Playing Video Games: A politically charged piece, this work depicts a gorilla playing video games. It is clearly inspired by the very… first game Daan ever played, Mario Bros. The flies emerging in the piece reference another theme Daan often draws on, that of Big Brother and the constant surveillance exerted by governments. We are always being watched. Yet, despite its political undertones, the work remains playful, perhaps even lighthearted. It reflects Daan’s childhood and the experiences between then and now. The gorilla, a primate, tells the story; ultimately, we are all primates.
Delving into the depths of glass art since childhood, Daan Theys couples glass and iron oxides to create multisensory paintings. His style blends realism and abstract elements, sculpting dream fragments in an amalgam of painting and installation art. The surrealistic narratives of his pieces embody an exploration of time, memory, and identity, interleaving contemporary issues and historical references.
