About this artwork
It is a picture with Korea's mainstream newspaper media soaking it in water, grinding it with a mortar, mixing it in a bond to make a dough, and then putting the dough on the canvas and drawing the scenery with chopsticks. Through this, I transformed the language of the newspaper, which consists of writing and photography, into a world of nothingness, and on top of that, I wanted to reveal the blind will that make up the world and the individual.… I reinterpreted the old landscape painting of the late Joseon Dynasty, which depicts the landscape of the east coast of Korea, with a paper relief, and tried to express the lonely atmosphere and sublime beauty through the rare rock created by the erosion of the waves. The surface of the house, located on the sky, waves, rocks and cliffs, was painted with silver-colored acrylic paint, and the entire surface was again sprayed with charcoal dust. This work was exhibited in Korea and Japan.
« I am a Korean artist who loves solitude, silence, and contemplation. I do not believe in philosophical realism. I believe that the world lasts only in permanent change. »
Daesun Choi is an artist based in South Korea whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally, as well as in Japan, the United States, and Germany. His most recent abstract and semi-abstract compositions are made using newspapers, hanji, or paper strings. For Choi, the newspaper represents the secular world in which we live. However, he does not believe that this medium gives an accurate interpretation because of the inherent limitations of text language, whose meaning can be easily distorted.
