About this artwork
The artwork titled “Selfportrait” is painted in acrylic on canvas and measures 80 x 100 cm. It features a complex and abstract composition that conveys an introspective and expressive representation of the self. The background is in vibrant colors such as yellow, blue and orange, creating a dynamic and energetic atmosphere.
In the foreground is a large, mask-like figure, which is the central element of the self-portrait. The facial features are… highly abstracted, with striking white lines that emphasize the eyes and mouth. The contrast between the dark and light areas gives the picture depth and intensity. This representation of the self can be seen as a reflection of one's own inner self, perhaps as a mask or perhaps as reality.
In addition to the central figure, other stylized figures and shapes can be seen, adding a narrative dimension to the work.
Helena Kaschurow, a trained painter, uses acrylic paints and mixed media on canvas or wood. With her stylistic elements from pop art, minimalism and neo-expressionism, she creates works that oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Clear contours meet expressive elements and flat color compositions. Her intense, lively works convey deep emotions and tell stories about interpersonal relationships and self-representation in society, often with a sarcastic component.
