In this work, I deliberately damaged the piece I had drawn. Some parts of the damaged paper are torn. When such damage is done, many artworks simply become trash. However, I believe that the most beautiful form of beauty exists just before something turns into trash. The line between the most exquisite beauty and trash is truly razor-thin. This piece miraculously remains in that most beautiful state—preserved right at the very edge of becoming trash.… It is one of the works in my series called "Eve of Collapse".
I wrote the character "瞬" which means "a fleeting moment," like the blink of an eye, yet within it lies infinite depth.
In Zen, it is said that all of existence resides precisely within such a transient moment.
« I find the coolness and beauty in daily life and try to express it in my own way. »
Hiroshi Wada is a contemporary calligraphy artist based in Kyoto, Japan. He began his calligraphy training at the age of five and, at 30, pursued more rigorous study under Ryosetsu Imai, a renowned master. Since 2017, Wada has shared works that transcend traditional calligraphy with a global audience. His works are regularly featured in solo and group exhibitions, particularly across the United States and Europe.
Wada’s art is an “art of the line” that captures traditional calligraphy’s essence while striving to transcend it. His creation begins from nothingness. He forgets the classics, returns to innocence, and draws from the stillness of Zen.
Some of his pieces bear signs of damage. When such unintended marks fuse with the intentional lines, a deep resonance is born. There is a fine line between such work becoming mere trash or transforming miraculously into beauty —and Wada believes true beauty exists precisely on that edge.
