About this artwork
2024 / Acrylic, paint, wax pastel, wood and blue rhinestones on Masonite board.
An adorned alpaca (that probably works as a teacher) wearing glasses and a patterned choker collar stocked with school supplies and snacks, including a pretzel, lollipop, pencil, doughnut, eraser, marker and scissors. The alpaca is ready and prepared to start her day.
In crafting this artwork, I layered acrylics, oil pastels, ink, and latex, integrating reclaimed objects… for a textured effect. I drew on figurative styles fused with surreal pop art to capture the whimsical nature of an alpaca adorned in playful accessories. This piece is an embodiment of joy and a friendly greeting to the viewer, designed to bring a burst of color and light-hearted energy into any living space. Inspired by the cheer and unassuming wisdom of the alpaca, it invites smiles and lively conversations.
« I create colorful, warm and happy art- just like my homeland. My graphic-design and illustration background allowed me to diversify my style into Illustrative, geometric and expressionist themes. »
Ilaamen Pelshaw is a Guatemalan painter based in the United States whose work has been featured in solo and group shows nationally. Growing up with a grandfather who was an artist and muralist, Pelshaw became interested in art herself and developed a practice centered around positivity and warmth. Mostly working in acrylic on canvas, her work is always colorful and illustration based, whether through quirky animal portraits or paintings of Latin American culture and crafts.
