About this artwork
It has been suggested that a painting holds for us all that we bring to it. Such is the case in Figures, subtle renderings of the human form whose effect upon people varies, spanning the full range of emotions we as individuals possess with respect to ourselves and others; allowing for each a personal interpretation of these figures be they seen in groups or singly, as friends or strangers Evoking moods of love or sadness of communion or isolation.… The interpretation and resultant experience as unique and as different as the individuals viewing the work. And I see a woman with a cell phone in the center of the work even though she was painted in 20 years ago before the current Omni presence of such joys.
To say that I, J Fitzpatrick am a self-taught painter with formal training is to miss the point. Yes, I have had formal training. yes, I am by nature an auto didact but for me painting is more experiential than an, assertive initiated act. For me painting is intentionaly not doing or thinking anything. It is sitting waiting quietly for what I can best describe as a visit from something outside myself. It may be there right away or it might not come for days. And then suddenly it is there-- an image that had not been there moments before and I go with it.
