About this artwork
“What Remains”
In this series of paintings, Jacqueline Engels refers to the work of Pierre Bonnard,"Femmes au Jardin" in which female figures move quietly and modestly through bathrooms, rooms and gardens. But instead of their bodies, Engels only shows what clothed them: the dresses. Or rather, their patterns.
The figures have half disappeared — dissolved in time and light — but the fabrics continue to float.
At the same time, this series resonates… with our own time. Where dresses used to tell a story of care, craftsmanship and identity, today they are often fleeting and massive — fast fashion as a disposable shell.
Where clothing was once made to last, fashion now fades away as quickly as the figures in her work.
With tender colors and quiet compositions, she depicts not only the absence of the body, but also the disappearance of attention and value. Each painting is a silent confrontation: with transience, but also with beauty.
Jacqueline Engels is an artist based in the Netherlands whose paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions nationally. Her landscapes, urban scenes, and conceptual based pieces are most often created in series. In an artistic practice that is marked by coincidence, Engels alternates between themes and pieces at the same time, "fluttering back and forth".
