About this artwork
WINDOW TO THE WORLD
Many years ago I was commissioned by a lovely lady to paint a picture. I discovered when I delivered it that she was house bound. She explained that I hadn’t given her a painting but rather a window! This touched me deeply and gave me inspiration to create my own 3D window.
I visited a 300 year old pub called Clenaghans that was once owned by a member of Sir John Lavery’s family and one of their windows caught my imagination.…
This piece is designed to intrigue the viewer with the reflection of the outside merging with the image of a geranium on the inside of the window.
After their kind patience during the planning of the piece, the owners of the pub were invited to see the window and they couldn’t believe what they were looking at, they said it appeared that I had chiselled it out of their wall!
I love trying to recreate nostalgia as this can appeal across the generations. I often think back to the lovely lady who inspired my work all those years ago.
Janice Lightowler is an accomplished multi award winning oil painter with a BA Hons Degree in Art and Design from Ulster University, Northern Ireland, whose practice grew amidst personal and political upheaval. She employs meticulous, naturalistic techniques on a large scale, using a single tiny brush per canvas to achieve radiant luminosity and astonishing detail in her landscapes and portraits. The brush is then attached to the back of the canvas and remains with the piece. Starting with only a few marks on the canvas, Janice pushes the concept of standard composition. All these techniques have been developed to help her manage and control extreme spinal pain and the complexities of each piece consumes her. Her emotionally charged works blend nostalgia, despair, hope, and pain, inviting viewers into a space where beauty and suffering coexist, ultimately uplifting and deeply moving all who encounter them.
