About this artwork
The First Touch is the opening work of Ly Tran’s ongoing series “Touch”, which explores human relationships and emotional bonds through moments of physical contact.
This painting captures the earliest and most instinctive connection between a mother and her child — a touch that precedes language, memory, and thought. Through thick, layered oil paint and dynamic, flowing gestures, the forms dissolve and merge, suggesting intimacy, protection, and… unconditional presence rather than literal representation.
The textured surface mirrors the complexity of emotion embedded in a single touch — fragile yet powerful, fleeting yet eternal. For the artist, this first contact is not only a physical gesture, but the origin of trust, love, and human connection.
The First Touch invites the viewer to reconnect with the primal tenderness that shapes all relationships that follow.
Ly Tran is a Vietnamese-American painter educated in Moscow, influenced by the cultural intersections of Vietnam, Russia, and the United States. With a multidisciplinary background in painting, graphics, sculpture, and photography, her work merges abstraction with impressionism and expressionism.
Her paintings feature bold color, rich texture, and a balance between geometric structure and organic gesture. Each composition conveys movement and emotional energy, inviting reflection on human connection, memory, and transformation.
Ly Tran has exhibited across the United States. In 2023, she presented her solo exhibition “Đa Sắc (Colorful)” in Hanoi and participated in international exhibitions throughout Southeast Asia. She received the Best Artwork Award at the BON VOYAGE – Freedom and Love International Art Exhibition 3.0 in Borobudur, Indonesia. In 2025, her work was shown in Vietnam and Europe, including “Hello Vietnam” and “Sparkling Vietnam” in Vienna.
