About this artwork
"Spring Awakening" belongs to the "Forest Weavings" series. What fascinates me here is the moment when a fern unfurls: the frond tips trace small spirals in space, still softly hairy and full of promise. The narrow perspective detaches the fern from its surroundings, transforming it into its own intricate network of lines, curves, and repetitions. The monochrome palette reduces the scene to structure and light, the background blurring into a soft…
carpet of forms—like a woven foundation from which this new life emerges. For me, "Spring Awakening" is a quiet image of beginnings and hope: of the delicate movements with which the forest begins to grow anew from within each year.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance.
