About this artwork
The title is ironic because it recalls the name of the terrifying ferryman to Hell of the poet Dante, Charon, who guided souls in otherworldly rivers, while instead the image refers to an elderly Sunday sportsman rowing in a boat on the river. In summer, the river that crosses the city of Padua is experienced with great pleasure by inhabitants of all ages.
