About this artwork
The Tree
Series: DoodleFlow – the gesture that comes before thought
Description
Faces always emerge in my work. I don't know why. I don't seek them out, I don't plan them, I never set out with the idea of drawing them. And yet, eventually, a face appears.
This is what happened in The Tree, too. I let my pen flow freely, without connoting, without defining. And within the interweaving of lines, a profile emerged. I didn't construct it: it… revealed itself.
I never define the features, I never close them. The face remains open, evolving. And as it emerges, it takes root. The lines descend like roots, as if that identity were searching for ground.
This work is about precisely this: each of us must find our roots. Not as something static, but as a process. Rooting oneself means recognizing oneself. It means finding a foothold within the movement.
In DoodleFlow the gesture is the origin.
The sign is born from the gesture.
And in the end, a face always emerges from the sign.
Maria Carpino, known professionally as Marilù, primarily uses ballpoint pen as her medium of expression, though she also explores other media such as acrylic, ink, or chalk. This personal transformation marked the beginning of her artistic journey, enriched by experiences in Gerardo Lo Russo's studio and a solid background in psychology. Her technique is based on DoodleFlow: a spontaneous, immediate gesture in which the line emerges without premeditation, allowing forms to manifest freely, often unexpectedly, in a continuous dialogue between chaos and order. Her works convey authenticity, introspection, and the vibrant energy of the original gesture, which becomes visible emotion.
