About this artwork
The painting's title refers to Émile Zola's "La Bête Humaine" (The Human Beast). The locomotive in the novel was thus named to give it life. It feeds on the labor and sweat of the men who drive it.
The painting's colors, ranging from bluish grays and ochres to black, evoke the coal dust that fuels the engine and coats everything. The paint is applied thickly over a layer of plaster laid on the canvas. The texture is clearly visible in the image.… Despite its cool, dark tones, the painting is remarkably luminous thanks to highlights and the warm touch of ochre.
« Do not leave the viewer indifferent, create emotion. »
Marie Ferrand is an artist based in France whose paintings have been exhibited nationally. She describes the central themes in her art as relating to scenes inspired by life, humans, and their joys and sorrows. Ferrand primarily creates with acrylics, as their fast-drying quality suits her spontaneous brushstrokes. In addition, she employs mixed techniques with impasto and collage on canvas.
