About this artwork
In his opus Satyricon, the ancient writer Publius Petronius Niger, arbiter elegantiae (“judge of elegance”) at the court of Emperor Nero, created a moral portrait of a decadent late Roman society.
In the works shown by Maximilian Davis, the impressions of the figure "Encolpius" are the central part of the cycle. Scenes of passion are reflected in the many memories and experiences during the journey through history. Various stations, such as the… stories of the poet Eumolpus and the scenes at the Cena Trimalchionis, find their place here. Maximilian depicts key experiences of these memories of Encolpius with all kinds of metaphors on large canvases. The numerous drawings manifest other states and feelings of Encolpius. From themes of birth to death and everything in between.
« I try to give space to thoughts, time, and content-related abstraction. »
Maximilian Davis is a painter, draftsman, and sculptor based in Austria whose works have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Norway, and India. Through his diverse compositions, he explores themes relating to literature and fleeting moments, capturing poems and passages with a visual language that is fused with metaphors and "metaphysical depth". Davis most often creates with acrylics, oils, and lacquer on canvas.
