About this artwork
The painting is called The 88 Before They Go Extinct.
These butterflies are not genetically modified; they are naturally white on one side and have a hint of red, with black lines running through them forming the number 88. When they spread their wings, their backs are deep blue and black. They are not very large, with a wingspan of approximately 3 cm.
The 88 is in danger of extinction for several reasons: indiscriminate spraying, changes in the… native flora, and therefore, they cannot easily find their food, the elm, sapindus, and trema, which are their diet. Another very important reason is capture, which is perhaps the most worrying. Their colors, their black lines that form the 88, make them sought after by collectors who believe it is a good omen to have them.
