About this artwork
The work is composed of textured, interlocking forms in muted tones of sage green, soft blush, charcoal, dusty white, and dense black. These elements sit within a rich, earthy red border that frames the composition like a worn cover of an old codex. The colour palette is intentionally subdued, creating a quiet but grounded energy—allowing each form to speak through its texture, subtle imperfections, and surface marks.
Layers of paint have been applied… and scraped back using a palette knife, leaving behind small traces of underlying colour and gestural memory. These add personality to the structured design and hint at the work’s process-driven nature.
Dimensions: Canvas is
100 x 150 and image is 90 x 140 cm so there is plenty of canvas to stretch the artwork across bars.
Nicholas Molloy, a painter trained in illustration and experienced across countries, works primarily in acrylics, meticulously building and sanding back layers to create rich, textured surfaces. His style ranges from “abstract architectural” pieces highlighting geometric interplay and industrial motifs, to expressive landscapes of the Scottish coast and playful, naive botanicals. Using a reductive technique that reveals ghostly, weathered traces beneath his compositions, he seeks to evoke balance, discovery, and dynamic visual intrigue—inviting viewers to find new details and feel a harmonious tension between structure and organic unpredictability.
