About this artwork
This large-scale abstract painting features interplay of geometry, color, and negative space. Fine, precise linear structures weave across a softly textured, off-white background, forming an intricate network of angular shapes and architectural outlines. Within these frameworks, blocks of muted yet resonant color are carefully placed, creating a sense of balance and quiet tension.
The composition evokes modernist architectural plans, but with subtle… variations and imperfections in the color fields to introduce depth and gesture, contrasting with the crispness of the drawn lines. The result is a contemplative, spatially complex work that invites the viewer to navigate its pathways and planes, discovering new relationships among form, color, and space.
Overall canvas size is 220 x 160 with the actual artwork size 200 x 140 cm - so enough canvas to have it stretched across bars.
Nicholas Molloy, a painter trained in illustration and experienced across countries, works primarily in acrylics, meticulously building and sanding back layers to create rich, textured surfaces. His style ranges from “abstract architectural” pieces highlighting geometric interplay and industrial motifs, to expressive landscapes of the Scottish coast and playful, naive botanicals. Using a reductive technique that reveals ghostly, weathered traces beneath his compositions, he seeks to evoke balance, discovery, and dynamic visual intrigue—inviting viewers to find new details and feel a harmonious tension between structure and organic unpredictability.
