About this artwork
Jusuf is one of the first portraits I painted for this series. Using black, gray, and red, I tried to achieve maximum contrast in the image. Jusuf's expression is melancholic and somewhat sad, perhaps to draw attention to his fate. His gaze suggests he accepts his situation. A yellow stripe at the edge adds a touch of brightness to the picture. This light gives him hope of finding something better.
