This two-part work (available for separate purchase!) is a conceptual, symbolic image composition about displacement, memory, and the return of historical patterns.
In a reduced, almost monochrome visual language, railways, luggage and waiting people meet – universal symbols of forced movement, loss and being at the mercy of greater powers.
The work on the left depicts an abandoned freight car, suitcases placed in front of it, and a small, red… floral motif as a deliberate break from the gray and earth tones. The flower stands as a fragile counter-symbol of life, dignity, and memory. The work on the right condenses the message: a crowd of people on railway tracks, a single child in the foreground, a view into an uncertain future. The location marker is not geographical but symbolic – a reference to present and past forms of displacement.
Peter Striegel works primarily with oil paints and occasionally with acrylics; his artistic development is shaped by extensive travels, particularly through Africa, and a profound engagement with human experiences. His technique blends realistic depictions with symbolic abstraction, layering dynamic layers of paint to make social and individual narratives visible. His works oscillate between documentary precision and introspection. In doing so, he conveys overwhelming emotions such as dignity, pain, and hope, inviting the viewer to rediscover humanity and fragility.
