I am a textile artist creating sustainable fibre art deeply connected to nature, material and seasonal cycles. By combining traditional textile techniques with a contemporary approach, my work is grounded in rural life — in the quiet rhythms, textures, surfaces and raw honesty of the surrounding landscape.
Rather than replicating nature, I translate its presence — growth, change, and seasonal movement — into textile and material language. A close… relationship with time, land and fibre shapes my slow, process-led practice, exploring the connections between maker and material, landscape and body, tradition and contemporary expression.
The tapestry "The beginning" is made of waste materials from textile industries. I wove this tapestry as a symbolic beginning for the journey as a full-time textile and fibre artist.
By intertwining traditional textile techniques with contemporary design, Reena Curphey aims to create artworks that are inspired by the beauty and significance of natural elements and materials used in her textiles. Through her creations, Reena seeks to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity, sustainability, and the cultural richness embedded in our heritage, fostering a deeper connection between art, nature, and the preservation of our textile design and skills. While valueing the traditions, it is her goal to transform ancient textile techniques to fit into our modern world, where tranquility, harmony and connection to nature plays a vital role. Reena Curphey weaves her background in textiles into her expressive artworks, utilizing techniques like felting and traditional weaving.
