About this artwork
The motif of the window is one of the classic topoi of early image concepts. The framing function of the window creates a section that does not appear as an arbitrary fragment, but connects the view outside with the view of the familiar interior. In this sense, the window produces the contrast between interior and exterior in the first place. The interior is constituted by the outside, which is visible through the window; conversely, the outside… is perceived as something different from the interior. One can separate oneself from the surroundings and prevent views through curtains. The more open the view, the greater the possibility of looking in from the outside. Seen in this way, the theme of making the private visible always appears as a subject in the picture. In a series of works created since 2010, Richard Jurtitsch takes up the motif of the window in this art-historical tradition of the finestra aperta.
« In my most recent paintings, I focus on depicting windows covered in raindrops. My drop paintings are photo-realistic but still unreal and mysterious. »
Richard Jurtitsch is an award-winning artist from Austria whose paintings have been shown in solo and group exhibitions internationally. The common thread in his work is history, which he describes as providing insight into and a deeper understanding of current events. Jurtitsch's diverse pieces, painted in thematic series, are primarily created in oil on canvas.
