About this artwork
This painting's journey began with a deep dive into the ancient Japanese art of Nihonga. Using traditional pigments and binders shipped from Tokyo, each layer was applied with mindful intention.
Inspired by patterns on samurai armor, kimono batik, and the serene focus of meditation, the process became a practice in tranquility. The canvas slowly transformed, building layers of malachite green and azure blue, then adorned with golden comets, silver… galaxies, and gleaming nebulae.
A sudden, clear intuition revealed a missing element: the vital energy of red. In a final, decisive gesture, the brightest red pigment was prepared and splashed onto the canvas, completing its cosmic balance.
This piece is a physical record of a meditative artistic journey, blending ancient technique with a modern, expressive spirit.
Key Features & Details:
· Technique: Inspired by traditional Nihonga methods.
· Materials: High-quality natural mineral pigments, golden leaf on a prepared ground.
Serge Zalivatski, born in eastern Ukraine, works as a painter and sculptor, primarily on large canvases and sculptures, using Japanese Nihonga techniques, homemade mineral pigments, and leaf metals such as gold, silver, and palladium. His works are created in numerous, sometimes up to forty, layers, combining abstract, modern elements with classical traditions and an extraordinary variety of materials. In his paintings, he creates an atmosphere of harmony, longing, and meditative weightlessness that deeply touches the viewer.
