"The panther wakes up yawning. She feels her muscles ache; yesterday's hunt was difficult and fruitless. She can still feel the horns of the young wildebeest who put up a good fight." The story I tell myself is the foundation of my creation. It allows me to capture the most ordinary and intimate moments of the animal who, like us, yawns with frustration at her failures and yet must continue the next day. I deliberately emphasize the musculature in… this type of piece because, in my opinion, that's what gives life to the material.
The piece is available in brown or blue-black, but as it's a patina, the shades may vary from piece to piece. This particular piece is in blue-black. It's always possible to add a base to any of my sculptures without a plinth, as there are screw holes on the feet.
A passionate self-taught artist, Vassil was born in 1949. He began sculpting by carving and quickly moved on to modeling. His artistic expression developed through animal subjects. He then adopted bronze, the only material capable of capturing the movement and frenetic pace of his creations. For Vassil, choosing animals as the sole subject of his work was not a matter of chance, nor was it driven by aesthetic concerns. For him, animals were a means of expressing more easily what he could not have achieved with any other subject. There is a greater freedom to communicate through the lens of animal life, and for an artist who celebrates all aspects of existence, animals offer a powerful way to express everything without taboo. From the outset, expressiveness and movement have characterized Vassil's world. He thus distinguishes himself from the vision of past masters, for whom animals were an aesthetic element that made the object beautiful. His vision of animals is resolutely contemporary.
