About this artwork
A woman sits quietly in some non-descript urban landscape, watching her mobile phone. It's a contemporary smartphone, but the overall atmosphere is rather vintage-like. I tried to evoke the tension between the benefits of being constantly in the loop offered by modern technology and the sense of alienation and isolation that it can cause at the same time.
In a serene, contemplative energy to any space, this artwork invites viewers to pause and reflect… alongside the figure, creating a personal moment of stillness amid the chaos.
The title refers - as so often - to a rocksong that marked my younger days. In this case Blondie's "Call me" :
“
Call me my love
Call me any, anytime
Call me for a ride
Call me for some overtime
Call me in my life
Call me in a sweet design
Call me for your lover's alibi
Call me on the line
Call me, call me any, anytime
“
(Blondie • American Gigolo, 1980)
Walter Dermul is a professional oil painter with a background in marketing and a lifelong fascination for the arts. He uses alla prima techniques on canvas, focusing on representational and deeply figurative subjects—solitary figures, interiors, and architecture—rendered in muted, psychological palettes of blues and greys. His paintings explore themes of memory, transition, and human connection, evoking a quiet introspection that invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences, lingering between intimacy and ambiguity.
