About this artwork
I have only visited Istanbul once in my life, but it is a place that has never left my mind's eye and my creative imagination. It bestrides the Bosphorus, one of the most magnificent waterways in the world. There is something mystical, mysterious and magical about the Bosphorus. Lined with the superb architecture of such variety and history, it celebrates the empires and religions that have played such a part in that history. From Byzantium to… Constantinople to Istanbul, the Bosphorus has witnessed it all.
It is a spellbinding sight, providing excitement and possibility, but probably the most thrilling aspect of the Bosphorus is that it is where East meets West.
‘Bosphorus Twilight’ is an abstract celebration of this and is set as day turns into night. I have always found any water at night to be magical and intriguing, as the water ripples in the fading light, only hinting at what lies beneath.
Francesca Howard is a self-taught abstract painter with a rich background in art history, working primarily in oils, acrylics, and metal leaf on canvas. Her technique embraces intuitive color selection, allowing compositions to emerge organically and emphasizing the symbolic and emotional weight of color, inspired by Renaissance traditions. Her style is vibrant and evocative, blending tradition with personal exploration. Francesca’s paintings radiate a profound humanity, seeking to forge connections and communicate the shared depth of human experience through color and abstraction.
