About this artwork
The title ANDROID (a humanoid robot) provides the crucial clue. I have tried to explore how, in a technologized world, we hide behind machines or become one with them. Humans become ghosts within machines.
The person in the picture is hidden beyond recognition. The only thing that remains of their individuality is the gesture of their hands; the peace sign is a deliberately human gesture.
Lydia Thomas works primarily with painting and graphic art, influenced by her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. Her technique combines technical virtuosity with spontaneous drawing, deliberately creating a sense of blur within a contemporary visual language. Thomas imbues everyday objects with symbolic meaning, atmospherically blurring the lines between reality and the paranormal. Her works captivate by creating a disquieting, mysterious mood and revealing deeply hidden truths beneath the surface.
