About this artwork
I lived in Bulgaria for three years. This weaving symbolises the beauty of the rural and rich cultural environment Bulgaria represents for me. I am so grateful that a local, older woman, Baba Yanka, showed me the basics of weaving on a vertical loom. Working on a vertical loom means 'painting with wool' for me. For the local Bulgarians, what I designed and wove was very unusual. They use very specific, repetitive patterns, and I love to be very free…

Agnes Boes, a Belgian artist based in Ireland, creates across painting, poetry, photography, and weaving, drawing from a rich self-taught background with formal training in Brussels and Cork. Her style weaves symbolism and surrealism in deeply personal yet universal narratives, employing a contemplative process that balances intuition and careful observation. Her works invite viewers into the landscapes of her inner and outer world; exploring trauma, the here and now, and inner silence, encouraging each viewer to embark on their own intimate journey of discovery..
